Avon Ridge Recieves Coveted UDIA Environmental Accreditation
Homebuyers seeking a sustainable community that will help reduce their impact on the environment have had their task made easier now that Peet Limited’s Avon Ridge Estate at Brigadoon has received EnviroDevelopment accreditation in the categories of “Water” and “Ecosystems”.
The hard-earned Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) accolades recognise Peet’s strong focus on environmentally-sensitive design, and in particular the effort it’s put into water-saving measures, conservation and protecting native plants and animals in the new community.
UDIA CEO Debra Goostrey congratulated Avon Ridge on the accreditation and endorsement, which fosters sustainability and makes it easier for purchasers to recognise and select more environmentally sustainable communities and lifestyles.
Peet Limited Managing Director and CEO Brendan Gore said he was very pleased with the UDIA accreditation and the recognition it gives Peet’s strong commitment to developing environmentally-friendly and sustainable communities.
“Peet is honoured to have received the UDIA’s EnviroDevelopment accreditation,” said Mr Gore.
“As Perth’s population grows, environmental issues and sustainability are increasingly important. Avon Ridge at Brigadoon is a very special community and the protection of the natural environment, including native flora and fauna, was an essential component of the project.”
The UDIA’s EnviroDevelopment accreditation is a scientifically-based assessment program, launched by the UDIA in Western Australia in 2009.
Avon Ridge is one of just six residential communities to earn the accreditation. It has received accreditation in the categories of “Water” and “Ecosystems”. Peet Limited’s Shorehaven at Alkimos was the first development in WA to be recognised for leading water-sensitive design.
Becoming accredited acknowledges Peet’s commitment to protecting the Brigadoon ecosystem and taking steps to conserve the health and sustainability of the site’s natural systems, as well as demonstrating water-sensitive design through water efficiency mechanisms.
Avon Ridge at Brigadoon is a 214 lot development within the Darling Range which has been developed over 861 hectares, retaining the environmental and cultural values of the area.
Avon Ridge’s environmental design features include;
· the protection of native fauna from building envelopes and construction activity;
· extensive use of local native plants for public landscaping within the site;
· the protection of a 10.2 hectare creek line and associated Wetland Conservation Area to retain the ecological function of the creek line and wetlands; and
· fauna-friendly fencing to allow native fauna movement throughout the site.
Peet Limited has also put in place measures to retain and increase vegetation important to Black Cockatoos, which are unique to the area. Just over 70 mature habitat trees, which have the potential to provide valuable nesting hollows for a range of native animals, have been identified within the estate. These trees are specially protected throughout the community and are hoped to encourage Black Cockatoo species to breed.
The water-saving measures at Avon Ridge which were recognised by the UDIA include;
· a grey water recycling system provided for each household, which will supply about 75 per cent of irrigation water for private gardens;
· minimising private lawn areas to 75 sqm; and
· the provision to residents of a 4.5kl rainwater tank.
The first of Avon Ridge’s homesites went on sale last September. Available lots range in size from 1.5 hectares to 4.13 hectares (3.8 acres to 10.2 acres).
Residents will enjoy two new parklands planned for the community, complete with a tennis court, playgrounds and barbecue facilities. A range of local services and facilities are also close by.
